Facts/Notes: The murder hornet's real name is the Asian giant hornet. They can be 1.5 to 2 inches long, and are the largest hornet species in the world. While a single sting may not be fatal, it can be much more painful than a regular bee or hornet sting. Murder hornets pose a significant threat to honeybees. Five times the size of a European honey bee, it only takes a small number of giant hornets a few hours to completely destroy an entire beehive. Because the giant hornets kill bees in such large numbers, entomologists, beekeepers, and other researchers are worried about the devastating effect they could have on the already dwindling bee population.
